Nagoya, Japan, where you can wear your weirdest outfit and participate in the World Cosplay Festival

If you are “in” or up-to-date, you know that cosplay is one of the most popular trends in the world today. You see both the young and the old enjoying this new pop culture. And if you are into cosplay, you must not miss the World Cosplay Festival held in Nagoya, Japan, annually.

Cosplay short for costume playing was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi, a Japanese reporter, but its origin can be traced to the World Science Fiction Convention, where science fiction enthusiasts would dress up strangely and elaborately, inspired by their favorite science fiction characters. This started a craze in Japan, and together with Anime became one of the most popular and craziest trends not only in Japan but in other countries as well. The city of Nagoya, Japan is where the World Cosplay Festival is held annually, drawing in more than a million cosplayers from all over the world. The Nagoya Airport and the Chubu Centrair International Airport are your gateways to the world of Cosplay.

The Cosplay Festival began in 2003 and is a ten-day event held every July to August. Aside from a parade participated by thousands of cosplayers, the attendees are encouraged to join the numerous scheduled events and make friends with fellow cosplayers.  20 countries vie for the World Cosplay Championship crown which is the highlight of the event. This is taken very seriously, that participating countries have pre-qualifying competitions and national competitions to pick the best cosplay group to represent them in Nagoya.

Even if you are not into cosplay but want to enjoy a fun-filled festival where people wear outrageous, creative and out-of-this-world costumes, you will definitely be entertained by the World Cosplay Festival in Nagoya, Japan.
