    Ensemble of the Ferapontov Monastery

The Ferapontov Monastery is located in the Vologda region of Northern Russia. The monastery is in good status of preservation and is one of the most important ancient Russian Orthodox Monastic Complex. It was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. This period was of great importance to the Russian State as it was the period when the Russian State was unified and its culture got distinctively Russian.

The architecture of the monastery is an outstanding work of inventiveness and purity. The walls of the monastery comprises of paintings of Dionisy – the greatest Russian Artist of the 15th century.

The Ferapontov Monastery was founded in 1398 by St. Ferrapont who was a friend and associate of St. Kirill Belozerskii. The monastery achieved fame through St. Kirill’s pupil; the famous St Martinian Belozerskii who would become the abbot of the Troitse Sergiev Monastery in 1447-55.The monastery produced many notable leaders of the Orthodox Church at the end of the 15th century.

  • The bell tower (1680s)
